Considerations Before Purchasing

Heat pump water heaters are highly efficient. They work by drawing heat from the surrounding air and transferring it into the water in the tank. Because of that, there are a few things to keep in mind as you decide whether a heat pump water heater is right for your home:

  • Cooling effect: The area around the water heater will feel cooler while the unit is running. This is usually not an issue in garages or rarely used areas in basements but can be noticeable if they’re installed in or near the living space.
  • Adequate air space: If the water heater must be installed in a closet or other small area, make sure the unit has access to as much free air as the manufacturer recommends. This may require installing air ducting to another area, which can increase the cost and complexity of the installation. In those cases, consulting with a professional is recommended.
  • Size and clearance: Heat pump water heaters are typically taller and sometimes wider than standard electric models. Make sure you have enough room to install the unit safely — replumbing to move a water heater can be expensive.
  • Noise: These units are efficient, but the compressor and fan produce an audible hum. If your water heater is near bedrooms or living spaces, consider whether the noise will be acceptable.
  • Condensation: Heat pump water heaters produce some water condensation that must drain outdoors or to an approved drain. A condensate pump can be used, but this may require additional planning.
  • Proper sizing: Choosing the right size water heater for your home is essential for ensuring your household has enough hot water. A simple one‑for‑one replacement based on tank size doesn’t always work. Check first‑hour delivery ratings, speak with a qualified installer or review the resources below to make sure the model you choose meets your household’s needs.
  • Recirculation pumps: Hot water recirculation pumps that run continuously or on a timer are not recommended with heat pump water heaters.
